I am surprised that no one has suggested wearing gloves when out and about. It's still winter, it's quite cold - wear gloves.

No point. The idea of washing your hands is to prevent transfer of the virus from your hands to your nose mouth and eyes. Unless you change your gloves for a clean pair every hour or two you are going to be wiping your face with a virus laden glove.

I think you are less likely to touch your face if you are wearing gloves. The gloves would be handy for opening doors and shaking hands with royalty. That sort of thing.

Back from my weekly Waitrose visit.( I lead a sheltered life.)
Oh dear no loo rolls to be seen and the staff said the panic has been going for several days.
Fortunately I got the very last kitchen rolls which I really really needed.
I saw one elderly lady in her mask. Check out lass said the lady has not got her gloves on today.
I did get my free newspapers with their supplements so could always revert to recycling them at home. I have not seen the eco folks recommending this old practice .
Nothing will stop this panic now !

Was in Tesco last Sunday, and a trolley load of reductions got wheeled out into the isle. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. 2 Packs of 24 Velvet rolls were reduced from £8 to £1.75 because the plastic wrapper had a small tear in it. Had both packs. Bargain!!
Then whilst rummaging through what else was reduced, I spied some cheeky git trying to take them out of my shopping trolley. I soon sent him packing with a flea in his ear.

You tool. I didn't deprive anyone of bog rolls, other than another bargain hunter who wasn't as quick as I was. They had 2 pallets full by the tills. as well as loads more down the tissue and bog roll isle. The 2 damaged packs probably only made up 1% of their total stock.
The only problem I had was having to move the 6 boxes of Persil washing powder, and 5 bottles of Lenor to make room for them in the loft.

I've told SWMBO (who reads Mail Online, but isn;t always taken in by it) we are going to have a day soon (could be tomorrow, who knows?) when any time you mention the virus, or click on a link to read about it, that's a Euro in the swear box. I could be on for a free beer or three I reckon :-)

Then again, I don't shopping that often, and given we're in a remote village where the nearest decent and well stocked supermarket is 10 miles away, it really does pay to bulk buy non perishable or long "use by date" items.

A nephew of mine, a junior quack in Lyon, France has been sent a Breaking Bad style respirator and gloves by the local authorities. He shares a small surgery with 3 other doctors and is the youngest there. I think the average age of his patients is in the 60's (so he complains).

My driver has just returned from Pepe La Sal ( Sunday open 10-14:00) with 8x6 slabs of green Mahou
He didn’t look for loo rolls...the Spanish were buying lots of meat at the deli counter and preparing their own BBQs. You can’t grill loo roll on the barbi.

There is a pretty good chance most of the population is carrying it, and you wont know till you are tested for it.
Dont forget only those who present with symptoms get tested. And then only people who feel really crap are going to see a doctor.

If (big if) most us are going to get infected it may be better to get it early. Unless you are in a high risk group, mix freely in order to get it, and you then get treated before the NHS is overwhelmed.
I am not being entirely serious but neither is it totally irrational. Unless everyone does it.

There is a flaw in this plan; you are assuming that you can*only* get it once. That is not necessarily the case. I understand that you are less likely to catch it again in the short termbut, like flu, it will be back.
Potentially this one is here to stay.
As a world we need to stop going out when we are ill,. stop coughing and sneezing on each other, and go back to the standards of hygiene hammered into us (me, anyway) when we were little.

I realise the economic disaster is bigger than just me, but I moved my pension funds into cash last Monday or Tuesday, which has already "saved" me a reasonable amount ( - conversely it had already "lost" a reasonable amount) - I just need to time it right to go back into funds.
I am considering (half seriously) staying here in the Algarve through to the autumn, by which time some sort of order and maybe a hint of a vaccine may be in sight. Especially as they have just announced the 2nd infection in/near my hometown. There is no sign of any panic down here nor any infection as far as I know.
SWMBO is reluctant though, and to ensure the travel insurance remained valid we'd need to travel back every 40 something days, and IMO air travel may be probably one of the highest risks I could take. But then - maybe the insurance isn't so important. I have an EHIC.

My travel insurance covers me for 60 days away from home. I’m in Spain for 10 weeks, but fly home with my old mum after two weeks, returning 36 hours later to rejoin friends in our rented place.
The old girl doesn’t bother with insurance...too complicated, and expensive, with previous and current ailments. If she croaks here I’ll get her cremated and bring her home in my hand baggage for a suitable service in the U.K.

In the right conditions the virus can apparently survive up to 9 days on a surface though apparently 72 hours gets most of it.
Unless it's 30 degrees plus. Like it is here. Then it doesn't survive.

Pembrokeshire has it's first two cases, a couple who have just returned from northern Italy. apparently they have been self isolating since their return, but that's what I would say whether I had or not. You wouldn't want the pitchfork mob turning up on you doorstep.

I think most people do but if you are really ill you need someone to look after you and ensure that you get help if your situation worsens. Spare a thought for those living by themselves, especially the elderly. It must be a very worrying and stressful time for them.

A lot of firms are now activating and staffing their business continuity sites. Trouble is, all they are doing is spreading the virus to the continuity site earlier than necessary. Doubled the risk in effect.

If only that was the case with the virus. A bit more fear would be very helpful, if directed towards avoiding contact and improved hygiene rather than buying bog rolls.
Growth in numbers is essentially exponential, and unless the rates of contact and infection can be brought down this will end up with a large proportion of the country infected in a period of weeks.
Today there are 273 known cases in the UK. And it's only flu. Nothing to worry about. That seems to be the standard view in the local FB groups.
But that number is currently increasing by a factor of 10 every 16 days or so. Until a large number of people have it, there's no reason to suppose that rate can be brought down without a reduction in contact rates (through restriction and isolation) or infection rates on contact ( through hygiene etc).
At the current rate we should hit the peak sometime between 2 and 3 months from now - exactly as the Chief Medical Officer has intimated, although I don't think he has mentioned that the number will be in the millions.
The big rider to this is the sensitivity to the growth rate of about 15% per day. SLow it down enough and the peak number of live infections drops massively as more people have recovered.

The recommendation apparently is that people with CVD should have the 'pneumococcal' vaccination to bat off the bacterial illness that comes after the viral infection in serious cases. Off to the GP's on Thursday.

That was de-bunked by the "doctor" on Jeremy Vine's programme earlier today (around 1pmish)...has no effect on the pneumonia connected to C19

Unfortunately, the flu and pneumococcal vaccines are ineffective against COVID-19 as the former only acts against influenza and the latter against the pneumococcal bacteria. Getting the vaccine does not decrease the risk of contracting the coronavirus.

Streptococcus Pneumoniae (The "Pneumococcus") is a common bacterial cause of pneumonia/death.
If you get the 'flu or presumably CoVid-19 it opens the door for this bug to finish you off.
It certainly doesn't stop you getting 'flu, CV, or walking under a bus for that matter.
Anyone with a chronic illness/over 65 should have had the Pneumococcal vaccine once along with one of their annual flu jags (it's typically a one-off unless you have no spleen or have a rather weird immune system).

Thanks Lygonos (and everybody else). Worth asking my GP then. I don't think I've had the pneumococcus job although I have had flu jabs the last 2 years (at 65 & 66).

Shame about the timing. If we had had the coronavirus in early 2016 we'd probably still be in the EU now.

Several years ago, when I was offered the pneumonia jab, I looked into its effectiveness. Apparently, pneumonia is caused by a hotch-potch of bacteria, largely Pneumococci, and the blend of the vaccine may or may not be appropriate in all cases; i.e. it is of limited effectiveness. I thought that I had nothing to lose and went ahead regardless - though a friend who had had the jab went on to catch pneumonia ..... twice.
Pathogenic bacteria and viruses can interact, and take advantage of an immune system that has already been compromised. When my son was being detained by the Indonesian military, he managed to catch dengue fever (mosquito-transmitted virus). Whilst he suffered a short period of flu-like symptoms, his pilot - who was recovering from shingles, nearly died from dengue.
