Do you happen to know if this, or any other series of this fine programme, will appear on clockwork telly anytime soon?
|
Oooh, a Cosworth. I will be watching. :-)
For under £5k it's gonna be a shed though. Ed's going to be busy.
|
Saw both the Jensen and the Stag for sale on carandclassic recently - looked OK
|
not paying no fancy charges to watch those when all the information is in the air for free and its just a matter of descrambling it
shurely someone shirley can sell a clip on unscrambling device made out of chips from a ford 3000 radio/cassette?
|
One thing I've never understood is why doesn't Mike take Edd with him when he goes to view the car?
Instead, he buys the car and then hands it over and says to Edd, "well what do you think?" "Well to be honest Mike, it's a total shed and you should have walked away and looked at something that would have taken me less time to repair"
|
cos Mike's the dealer and Edd the wheeler?
|
Must be loads of you that watch this - do you think he should have stuck to his guns and demanded no less than six and a half for that half decent Cosworth?
Can't wait for the Triumph Stag......
|
I dont get why he dropped like that, guess its the old trader in home coming out - a sale is better than no sale.
8 series is the one i'm looking forward too, hopefully it'll be an 850i, that'd probably be the M73 engine. I'm too tall, don't fit in them comfortably :-(
|
I would have thought with Edd's knowledge he would have done a compression test before removing the head to check if the rings had worn. Take one reading, then squirt some oil down the plug holes and take a second reading to see if there was a big difference between the two readings.
|
Why did he fit that tatty old rocker cover back on and not give it a spray! at least while you have it in bits give it a fettle with some nice black gloss and see the shine when built up with nice shinny new gaskets.
That spit was a nice motor still don't think we see all the work they do.
|
>> with some nice black gloss
IIRC, Edd prefers to use satin black for everything.
|
Just finished watching Episode 4, the 8 series on Sky+.
Never seen plastic repairs like he did on the nose cone, i was really impressed. I even reckon i could give that a bash.
Those panel puller jigs he used on the door seemed seriously cool bits of kit. The 8's door skin is fairly plain, if rounded. Does anyone know how you'd tackle a modern door with all the creases BMW put everywhere?
|
I watched the episode of the MGBGT (again) the other evening on Turbo. Nice new red paint job, nice refurbished powder coated wheels, and then Edd goes and uses the old rusty wheel nuts (that were once chrome) to hold them on with.
|
It seems that there may be a new series starting on the 28th October... anyone know what cars are involved?
I hope that they'll do less of the more expensive and sports cars and do a few more ordinary cars this time... though I doubt they will somehow!
|
Good Stuff I love this programme, and so does SWMBO suprisingly.
Will it be Disco Real time again?
|
Yes I believe its on Discovery, but can't find out what cars!
|
The trailer they're showing features an 'Emma Peel' Lotus Elan
|
There was also a Bond Bug in the trailer.
|
www.yourdiscovery.com/web/wheeler-dealers/episode-guide/
"The new series of Wheeler Dealers premieres on Real Time UK on the 12th October, picking things up from Episode 6"
Lotus Elan - Episode 6 (12th Oct)
Bond Bug - Episode 7 (19th Oct)
Land Rover Defender - Episode 8 (26th Oct)
Volvo P1800 - Episode 9 (2nd Nov)
Subaru Impreza - Episode 10 (9th Nov)
|
It's about time they did a TR7 IMO
|
I suppose its easier for them to onsell the cars they do... but I'd like to see some that were the everyday cars of yesteryear as well... I'd love to see what Edd would say if Mike turned up with an Allegro or Chevette for instance!

Honda CRX MkI
Jaguar XJ6 Series III preferably Daimler trim
Opel Monza
Reliant Scimitar
Renault 5 Turbo

Outspan Orange car

...just two mini subframes bolted together...
It couldn't steer then?
|
course it can steer its a blooming big fruit
anyone who knows their pips would stay clear
now if it was a mango........
|
"just two mini subframes bolted together with a skin on top"
Yes, but just imagine the tension and drama as Mike exhausts all his trade contacts trying to source a new body / shell / peel / skin or whatever on time and within budget.
|
I bet it was heavy on juice.
Dreadful orange peel finish, too.

People were always taking the pith as well.
|
Could never work out which segment it fitted into.
|
I remember seeing the Outspan orange car in Edinburgh when I was a child. Later in life I was moved to reflect on the job interview which led someone to drive around in it.
" Yes, well, we'd be delighted to offer you the position Harry, you'll get a good basic and commission of course, and um... there is a a company car too...not entirely conventional but you'll like it I'm sure.."
" What, you mean it's orange or something? "
"Yes, something like that"

>> Lotus Elan - Episode 6 (12th Oct)
So much for accuracy on the WD website. Channel hopping tonight, they're showing this episode on Discovery Shed (ch 242 on Sky) right now.
Bond Bug - 14th Oct
Land Rover Defender - 21st Oct.
etc......
|
why not the 21e with 21 extras?
|
>> Lotus Elan - Episode 6 (12th Oct)
>> Bond Bug - Episode 7 (19th Oct)
>> Land Rover Defender - Episode 8 (26th Oct)
>> Volvo P1800 - Episode 9 (2nd Nov)
>> Subaru Impreza - Episode 10 (9th Nov)
Totally inaccurate info on the WD website.
The Bond Bug was shown on the 12th. According to Sky's planner guide, next weeks episode (19th Oct) is the Land Rover Defender.
The Bond bug is being repeated right now on Discovery Shed - although the planner guide says it's The Land Rover Defender.
Still, if you've missed any of the episodes, I'm sure they'll be repeated more times than Only Fools & Horses / Faulty Towers / Open All Hours get shown on UK Gold - lol.

Wheeler Dealers Revisited.
What a waste of an hour that was. Just another excuse to repeat past episodes (they get repeated often enough as it is!), followed by a 5 minute chat right at the end by the person who now owns the car.
Would have been better to have given a brief summary of what the car was like when first bought, followed by a brief summary of the work, followed by the interview, then move onto the next car.
The time wasted in Tuesday's episode could have been far better managed if they'd kept it to 15 mins per car.
Someone at Discovery is really milking these shows to death.

But the million channel TV addicts still tune in, don't they? ;-)
|
Yes we tune in and there still good repeats just like The Garage on sky another great program and this must be 5 years old now, I can't see them doing any more series but it's still good to watch again and again and..........
|
>> But the million channel TV addicts still tune in,
Well there's at least two that won't be! I totally agree, VxFan... that programme was a total con... Mr Brewer has done his reputation no good at all playing at that game... As you say, 15mins recap and 15 mins on present condition would have been ok - I actually turned off half way through the last bit (the whole point of the programme!) I was so fed up with it... I shan't be bothering with the other "revisited" series...
Now the "... is born/reborn" series with that vet are well worth watching again... and again... humour and decent tips in one intelligent programme!

>> Yes we tune in and there still good repeats just like The Garage on sky
I only like watching them when the bleep filter is turned off ;o) Generally late at night, although I think they forgot to put a censored episode on one afternoon. Language Timothy!
>> Mr Brewer has done his reputation no good at all playing at that game...
The only funny bit was seeing how porky he's become since the older episodes.
|
Strangely he didn't look quite as porky when we saw him at the classic car show at the NEC over the weekend... Though those "shirts for the larger man" are quite good at covering up, so I'm told!
|
MB has another series on Discovery too. Frontline Battle Machines (i think) on Monday nights. Very good overview of what our boys are up to in Afghanistan. In the first episode he was onboard the Chinook when the pilot took a bullet to the head and still made it home - pilot got the DFC for that, I think.

New series of Wheeler Dealers coming up - my favourite motoring show. Picked up the info on Twitter as follows:
The new series of Wheeler Dealers begins on Discovery UK Tues 5th April 9pm.
I shall be setting the series link on my Sky box.
:-)
|
Ah! that would be blimmin Sky then :(

No, never watched either of those. Will keep an eye out for them.
I get very little time to myself with the main TV in the house, so I have to choose my treats carefully! Sky+ has been a godsend in this regard.
|
Sky+ is great, just set loads of stuff you fancy every so often then when you do have an idle hour, there's loads of good programmes to choose from.
The Garage is pretty entertaining, even M likes that, "I'm the boss of this garage" :-)
|
...New series of Wheeler Dealers coming up - my favourite motoring show...
Alanovic,
Thanks for the info - it's something else we agree on.
And I'll be doing the same as you with the Sky+ box.
|
The Garage is pretty entertaining, even M likes that, "I'm the boss of this garage" :-)
Jock and his team is old now approx 5yrs shame really they didn't make another series....
Less American cars crap and more British i say!!
|
>> New series of Wheeler Dealers coming up
Looks like it's moved from its usual channel (channel 240) to channel 520 on Sky.
|
its one of the better progs on sky. some of the american drivel is awful
|
Just to point out that it's not on a Sky channel. It's on Discovery. So if your platform of choice carries Discovery, you will get it. You don't need to subscribe to Sky to watch this series.
|
>>You don't need to subscribe to Sky to watch this series.<<
Eh? - how comes that then.
|
can you get discovery on freeview or freesat then?
|
...can you get discovery on freeview or freesat then?...
Don't think it's on Freeview, but it might be on cable - Virgin or BT.
|
It's certainly on Virgin - I have been known to turn to Discovery to peer at Mythbusters from time to time. Some of the things they do seem very Top Gearish. Last night they were doing the "can you beat a speed camera by going ever so quick" game.
|
they do refer to topgear doing it first though i think
|
I didn't think they did mention TG. I'm sure I remember Top Gear proving you could beat the camera at about 260 or something, but the Americans wimped out at a huge 140mph in their 6.5 litre V12 and decided you couldn't at under Mach one.
|
i thiught they said that a bbc motoring program had already tried it and succeeded at 180mph but it may have been an updated episode.
a bunch of american gi's on an airbase nr lincoln did this about 7yrs ago as i was there and they had a damaged but working camera and were taing sizeable bets on what would happen.
they succeeded at 196mph in a very modded corvette of some sort.
very interesting day out by invite only.
|
Who is watching tonight then?
I beleive its on 9pm "The Discovery Channel"
Im out so will have to video it, but already im looking forward to it.
|
Starts with a Jag E-Type tonight. Bit exotic for my tastes, but I'll be Sky+ing it.
|
>> Who is watching tonight then?
Me, well later on tonight. I bet it's not up to the same standard as the one Mark Evans restored though. His E-Type cost something like £83,000.

...I'll have to watch it on Thursday. Don't tell me how it ends...
Mike sells the car - sorry to spoil it for you.
|
I thought the original Gatso cameras worked in km/h and ran simple 8-bit logic - therefore the highest speed they could handle was 256km/h = 159mph.
|
I have a relative who is now retired from the Met traffic division. He claims to have tested one of the original Gatsos on a powerful motorbike. His version being that there was a speed above which the second flash was too late to capture an image on the stripey bits. I seem to think that was around 150mph+
|
and

Mmmmm.
That kinda backs up Humph and I then: Civic type R @129mph, too slow; CL55AMG @150mph, too slow; TVR Tuscan S @170mph, too fast. :)

07.25 Sat 9/4/11. MOBIL 1 THE GRID. March Hare trial.
I haven't any knowledge of what they'll show, but I recall looking into the camera a couple of times.
Let me know if you spot me. ;>)

For fans of the show I noticed this article (link below) that reveals some information about the new series currently being filmed.
The latest series will feature American sourced cars only.
Mike Brewer has been to the USA to purchase vehicles to be restored on the show including:
* DeLorean
* Karmann Ghia - the VW based coupe
* Chevrolet Pickup Truck (looks about late 1940's I think)

They could have saved themselves a lot of time by buying up the cars from the recently closed American car dealer on Castelnau in Barnes, SW London.
They always had a range of ludicrous US SUVs at even more ludicrous prices. There are only so many premiership footballers in SW London, and obviously not enough to sustain a business model. Who on earth else buys these things?
|

There's one born every minute, apparently.
|
>> American car dealer on Castelnau in Barnes, SW London.
Well, Boxsterboy, I hope we never crash into each other on the road because we often seem to use the same routes.
Stopping at the lights next to that dealership always used to be a minor high point on my own route from North Ken to Sussex. I used to try to work out which of the grinning or scowling monsters there would be most amusing or least horrible to drive around in. Now the place has gone blank and there's a moment of minor sorrow and loss instead.
There's a lot to be said for the traditional American jalopy. It is simple, robust, hard-wearing and comfortable. Not ideal of course for threading through London back doubles. Its thirst and cumbersome size are better fitted to US wide open spaces and low petrol prices. But I don't share knee-jerk British scorn for the things. I wouldn't have one but I quite like some of them (and there are one or two with quite serious brutalist performance too).
|
>> There's a lot to be said for the traditional American jalopy. It is simple, robust,

Not in my book. Yank tanks never have had and never will have anything anywhere near 'class'. Brutal, yes. Chintzy, invariably. Class, never.

I don't suppose there were many Deloreans or 1940's Chevy trucks there?
|
Ah, found it. American Carriage Company, been going for donkeys years. AFAIK it was owned by Stephen Ouvaroff, who has been into american cars since the early seventies at least and a keen motor racer I believe.
All a bit sad really. At least the tree huggers will be happy .
Now, they ARE sad.
|
I dont know I'm more a city person but without trees no live.
Only have being to the states a few times I took a liking to the old model Ford Mustang. In Florida roads nice and wide, drove from Orlando by Miami to the keys.

4th Oct - Dodge Charger
11th Oct - DeLorean
|
Saw the Charger one.
I absolutely peed myself with laughter over the gear linkages. The thing's quite obviously designed for one of those huge Yank longitudinal slushboxes. The much smaller manual box ends well before the cabin, so even with the enormous dog-leg gear lever it still needs a remote selector and has the most monumentally Heath Robinson arrangement of levers and rods to operate the box.
I'm not surprised they go wrong. Only in America.......
Incidently, anyone else noticed they cheat?
Obvious one:
The wheels on the donor BMW 635Csi were scruffy and shot, but became magically perfect on fitting to the car and conjured up a new set of centres out of thin air.
There are many others, that green Mini sprouted so many new parts that never made the list of purchases it wasn't funny.

Now they have finished with the American cars send Mike to Australia and bring back all the right hand drive muscle cars for edd to work on................
Good series and interesting there is plenty more scope go to Japan and get some classics.
|
That Chevvy bel air looked awful in yellow. Would have looked far better in candy apple red.
|
Yes i would have liked red but as the chrome was added it did improve the overall New York cab look.
Just a shame they didn't paint the engine as it stood in a barn for years & underseal the floor pan better.
But it's only 1hr.!
|
Did you notice the paint finish beneath the rear chrome trim pieces as they were fitted? I know it's hidden once the bits are in place but it looked shoddy to me.
|
Yes, i noticed that plus there was no mention of the new roof lining or how much it cost !
|
>> Just a shame they didn't paint the engine as it stood in a barn for years & underseal the floor pan better.
Yes, as per usual only half the job got done.
No mention of an engine service either, other than fitting another carb. Also no mention of diff & transmission oil change, or changing any of the fluids come to that.

Excellent, something non-exotic for a change - i.e. the Morris.
|
Is an Isetta exotic then?
|
>> Is an Isetta exotic then?
Some of them are, by definition. Others were built in the UK, so aren't!
|
Well, yes, in a way, even if they're not hugely expensive they're quite exotic, as in they're unusual and most people wouldn't bother with one. I was just expressing my feeling that most of the shows are dedicated to more exotic fare, out of the interest zone of most DIYers, but if you want to start an argument, fire away. I'd like to see their balance of episodes nearer the 50/50 mark in terms of doing useable everyday cars, which they used to do in the early days of the show.
My profuse apologies to you if my initial post was lacking in description, I'm working hard to fill the government coffers with tax so they can subsidise the EU most days, which leaves little room for perfectly nuanced and balanced internet forum posts.
Will try harder, teach.
;-)
|
>> Is an Isetta exotic then?
>>
Compared to some of the cars you have owned, yes :-)
|
Nothing wrong with Morris Minors that a good car breaker will not solve.
Horrible cars, dreadful brakes and axle tramp with 40bhp!
|
Given microcars were supposed to be for people who couldnt afford a 'proper' car, the idea that they have suddenly become exotic is rather odd, they are just unusual because we dont have cars like that anymore.
By that measure my Rialto was exotic, although I wouldnt recommend one for improving your golf club image. Girls like them though.
|
Looking forward to the new series, far superior than the "copycat" one, can't even remember it's name. I only wish they were more realistic about the overall cost of the re-furb by telling us the number of hours labour Ed had to put in.
|
>> can't even remember it's name.
Wrecks to riches?
|
>> Morris Minor Traveller: 19 March 2013
Hmm, Edd will be able to add woodworking to his already impressive list of fettling skills.
I recall reading an interview with Alec Issigonis, in which he initiated the following exchange while they were talking about the traveller:
"Do you know anything about woodworking?"
"No, I don't."
"Ah. That's a shame."
"Why?"
"Well, while we were on the subject, I was rather hoping you'd be able to tell me why it rots....".
|
Looking forward to the 'Mex' one. Be interesting to see how Mike cuts a deal on the purchase.
|
The SLK one is on the TV now (here). I lost count of the number of times they mention the top quality of MB and how solid and well built they are, then went on to replace the super charger, some sensor, and the pump thing for the roof. Quality, my eye.
|
SLK rusts aswell, ive not cleaned one of those without a rusty bootlid. Quality.
|
Just found out that there are possibly 4 more cars in this series as well as the ones I previously listed.
1956 Volkswagen Beetle,
Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow,
1962 Cadillac Series 62,
1964 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray,
|
:-( Yank junk.
:-) Beetle.
