It seems to be a re-shell of a Granada 2.9 24v complete with subframes and suspension. Still can't see it being a good idea though :)

Oh the fun you could have at traffic lights in that Moggie.... :-)
You'd probably die quite quickly, but you'd go with a big grin on your face.
I'd want to make it tattier looking, personally.
Ultimate Q-car.

It is a wet afternoon out...
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120881529444
A 400bhp MG TF, build cost £250,000, for sale at £29k. Bargain!
|
Cosworth engine too. Probably the only TF ever made that doesn't blow head gaskets like they're free.
|
Dog,
That page had your postcode on it ( unless it;s the Anne Summers shop in Bodmin ?) - hid it for now.
Not quite

Thanks Rob, its my mate in Plymouth :)
|
That is one smart little motor - That could have pursued ed Mrs RP to be suitable a doggywagen 6 months ago. Unusual spec - petrol/sunroof/leather/auto quite a rare little beast. That would have been the Birmingham made vario valve engine ?
|
>>That would have been the Birmingham made vario valve engine<<
Search me guvnor, nice car though!
|
Link doesn't work for me.
|
Obviously been pulled off. That was a seriously nice little motor.
|
I just tried the original link that I had and its gorned alright.

Dog's been pulled off ?.....Some people are so lucky !

Re: the Autotrader link and postcode.
You only have to quote part of the Autotrader link for it to still work.
i.e. leave off everything after the long number.
eg
www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201211456234067
|
This is what my mate who originally sent me the link for said car says:
"Watch autotrader as some dealer will have snapped it up for £2.5K and will stick it on his forecourt for £4K plus.
Not a bad profit for just driving a few miles!"
Dunno how true that is of course?
|
Not sure if this baby has already been shown on here:

Surprised its up over 5K - assuming worst case with the declared gearbox fault and that thirsty motor could be an expensive buy for an 8 year old motor.
Seller doesn't have the most glowing feedback either

I think it's the narrower (for Japanese tax laws) Lucida equivalent - hence 4wd etc.
On a completely separate note, there's a 'new' (since 2008 I think) Toyota Previa trundling round in Asia which is really quite handsome IMHO (unlike the eBay abomination above).

>> With an add on Sat Nav ?
Well clearly its going to cost a lot, otherwise why trade it in against a crappy old horse box.
|
>> With an add on Sat Nav ?
Its not a Sat Nav, could be a Parrot Blutooth, or a DAB adaptor
|
I just asked my VW tech mate about repairing a Phaeton W12 autobox. He mentioned something about the end of our friendship if I dared to...... ;-)
|
"You are aware from the minute that you enter the car that this is something special".
Yeah, right :-D
|
£3700 and reserve not met...
|
My mum bought a new car in 1982, a Cavalier 1.6L hatch. It was launched in 1981 IIRC, and I remember thinking at the time that the Ital was incredibly dated in comparison. That was before the Sierra hit the roads
I think, briefly, in 1982 'Y' reg examples of Cavalier, Sierra, Ital, Ambassador (Maxi?) existed. The question is who bought the BL offerings, and what on earth possessed them ;-)
Actually, I can partly answer my own question - my Grandad bought a 1982 Maxi... That was brown though, not silver birch ;-)
|
The positioning of the spare wheel was good.
|
Titter ye not.
My old guvnor bought a facelift Marina service van, not sure if the Ital front ever made it to the vans, around the time this was made.
That too had the A+ 1.3 engine, and it wasn't a bad motor at all.
A workmate and myself used that van for a thrash From Northants to High Wycombe and back cross country daily for around 2 years whilst we were on contract hire, despite being well thrashed, the van performed well and economically, never broke down and started first time every time, often carrying two fully built up truck tyres on wheels for the inevitable punctures we gained on hard tip work, plus permanently situated jacks wheelbraces and other tools...yes we changed our own wheels and fixed our own running repairs.
If well maintained, especially keeping the front suspension greased, the basic design wasn't as bad as some would have you believe.
|
My dad bought a 1.7 hl new in 1983. A70MKX if I remember correctly. It did over 200k miles before major work was needed.
Still a bit of a dog though.
|
All that verbosity and then they describe it as an automatic in the top of the listing.
|
>>The question is who bought the BL offerings, and what on earth possessed them ;-)
I bought a new Maxi 1750 in 1980, just before BL introduced the Maxi II. It wasn't a bad car really, apart from multiple rattles and squeaks and an annoying clutch judder.
Wish I had spent another £500 and bought a Cavalier, though.
|
I had a 1978 Cavalier as my first company car. Only a 1.6L. The one that was RWD and had a droop snoot. Cracking car though. Willing engine and handled sweetly. Unfortunately it was custard yellow with a sort of orangey / tan check interior.
I lived in Edinburgh at the time and American tourists used to think I was a cab.
Had to put a radio in it, still got that somewhere I think. Manual push button thing.
|
>> I had a 1978 Cavalier as my first company car. Only a 1.6L. The one

>>
That's still the car I probably have the fondest memories of. Not only a geat drive but a very pretty car, so much better looking than the bloated heaps of today.
|
My Dad bought a new Maxi in 1981. He was buying British and it was his second Maxi, the first one was let go as it was on the verge of needing gearbox work and welding at 4 years old.
I learned to drive in it. I had a real shock when I then went out in my driving instructor's Fiesta and realised there were vehicles in which it was possible to feel the clutch biting point, change gear without baulking and feel which way the car is going through the steering.
The second Maxi had all the weaknesses of the first, with no obvious sign that BL had improved anything. Gearbox synchromesh wore out on 2nd and 4th after 18 months with no chance of any goodwill from BL (they pointed out it was a hi-tech 5 speed box so could not possibly be as robust as a 4 speeder). Problems with the paint peeling off were solved by respraying the affected panels in a noticeably different shade, rust started bubbling through after around about 3 years. Choke cable snapped and the replacement need 2 weeks to be delivered. Hydragas suspension collapsed, etc. etc.
It was the last BL product my Dad bought. For me it was an introduction to driving an antique, even by the standards of the early 80s, and to seriously bad customer service.
|
I had a narrow escape from a new Ambassador in 1982, after owning a succession of BL's bigger FWD cars, all of which I liked in spite of appalling build quality, etc, etc. My brief encounter with an All Aggro is another story.
But one day my next-door neighbour asked me to drive his recently-bought Ital, because he wasn't entirely happy with it. I just couldn't believe how diabolical it was. You couldn't even sit straight.
After our discussion he turned it in for a new base model Cavalier - which was a super little motor.
I guess any car with ultra low mileage has value as a curiosity - I have mentioned my friend's 2CV that has only been on the road once in its life - but only as a curiosity, not necessarily as a desirable artefact.
|
Pal and his family used to go to France camping with us in the 70s, he in his new Austin Ambassador. Whileing away few hours in one town we popped into see local BL dealer after friend felt "something not quite right" up front in the Ambassador. Very obliging Monsieur put it on lift and went underneath, to be heard muttering same word over and over ..."incroyable". Invited us to have a look. Only one of the engine´s 3 mountings was affixed. Drove very gingerly home and took it back to supplying dealer - who wasn't overlysurprised. Quelle Quality Controllee!
Hacko
|
I have a soft spot for some of the old BL/AR stuff (Maxi, Princess, Mini) but I thought the Ital looked dated when it was brand new. Awful build/reliability as well. Our neighbours had a brand new one in 1982 and it was always back at the dealer. It also had visible rot at 18 months old.
This is an incredibly lovely example though, and I'm sure someone will be very happy with it. If it were a mk2 Cavalier or a Sierra, I'd be a lot more excited. :-)
On a related note, I saw an absolutely mint X-reg Allegro 2 on the M3 yesterday. Funny how you still instantly recognise a car when you haven't seen one for about 10 years.

>>Unfortunately it was custard yellow
A colleague of mine had the same. Custard yellow seemed to be one of the most popular colours for the Cavalier.
|
Well, I was the organ grinder's monkey's assistant's gopher in those days so no metallic paint for the likes of me. The company had bought a yellow one, a pale blue one and a red one for three new starters that day. My train was late and the yellow one was what was left...Always remember it cost me £6 to brim it with 4* the first time I filled it. Had to write a cheque for serious money like that.
Still liked it though. My boss in those days had a metallic brown 3.0S Capri with gold coloured wheels. Used to get a shot of that quite regularly. That was a fun car.
|
Yellow doesn't suit every car but I always though the Cavalier looked rather nice in it, particularly the higher spec models with a decent trim level.
|
I like lemony yellow - if I came across a really nice 406 coupe in that (rare) colour I'd be tempted even though I really should now have four doors.
There's a guy tooling round here at weekends in a Lancia Monte Carlo in what I think is a very fetching shade of sunshine yellow.
I had a girlfriend years ago who had a yellow Mk 1 Cavalier. She wanted to move it on and buy a Citroen Visa (which she eventually did) but it needed tidying up so she gave it a rattle can respray in the original custard colour - and made a brilliant job of it, too.
|
I used to like the Primrose yellow MGB roadster with a black hood, nearly bought one once, but ended up with BRG (or Brooklands green)
|
"The paint work is pretty much unmarked, with just a few chips touched in with a touch up-brush over the past 31 years and the odd blemish here and there, the tiniest of dimple dents to the bottom of the driver’s door and some very fine barely visible surface only hairline scratches"
That's actually quite a bit of wear and tear for so few miles.
"Italian design company Ital design, from whom the car took its name, was better known for its creations designed for the Italian greats - Bugatti, Lamborghini, Maserati and Ferrari" err Italian greats???? Bugatti????
|
An interesting conversation piece but a lot of money for a tarted up Marina £2000 maybe. It is going to be very slow as a 1.3 auto. If it was the 1.7 manual it would get more interest i think as more usable.
|
De-badged, it would confuse anyone under 40. Probably be thought of as some East European thingy.
Ted
|
>>It is going to be very slow as a 1.3 auto.
Is it an auto? Look at the pictures of the interior, does that look like a manual gear lever? Did they ever make a 1.3 auto?
|
There's a long story about the clutch seizing and stripping reverse gear etc so it must be a manual.
|
Sorry didn't look at the pics: just read the description that says it has an auto box. I remember these well and I am 34 but was car mad from a tot :) There were quite a few around in the early to mid 80s.
|
There was an Auto version IIRC;
|
Bids are over £4500.00 now and the reserve has still not been met ! I can't believe that anyone would pay that sort of money for it, especially as it doesn't sound as if it is in the sort of condition I would expect a 30,000 mile car to be in, let alone a 300 mile car.

Mint, low mileage Renault Fuego Turbo, anyone?

What a pretty car. Always wanted one, but not £10k badly. Still, it's nice to look at.
If nothing else, it proves that crowded engine compartments are not the preserve of modern cars. :-)

Nice car, I always looked forward to working on them (and driving them afterwards)
I wouldn't give 10 buckets of sand for it though, especially with his feedback!
|
Mmm... the engine has only been chipped? Shame, I would have expected a monster truck to have a monster V8 engine, not a 2.5 diesel!
I wonder if the transmission has been modified to allow for the bigger wheels?
|
I'd buy it just to annoy the neighbours (if I had any)
:)
|
I wonder if speed cameras could get that front number plate down there?

15k tops a couple of years ago. (Asking, of course, not necessarily getting).
The madness continues.

Ugly with either roof in place.
|
....even if I Lud's money and watch
|
Setting aside the question of the asking price, if structurally sound that's a very nice car indeed. A friend had a 2000 Spider which may have had slightly more curvaceous lines than that one. I will ask him when I see him tomorrow if I remember.
It wasn't fast - the 2600 in the same body was better from that point of view - but it was really, really nice. Alfas of that vintage felt classy and solid, as indeed they were. Five-slot gearlever like an oak tree...
|
What the heck were you looking for to find that Zero?
|
I was looking for a new gear lever knob for the Lancer, the old leather one has gone a bit worn and sticky
|
>> one has gone a bit worn and sticky
Oh dear, I could have phrased that a bit better.
|
I think that's been established already;)

That's a sweet little thing, Tubby.

Wow - a four branch manifold, this thing can really shift!
|
There's going to be some brown patches on the lawn after that photo session.
|
Seems a lot of money considering the condition, but then over 30,000 views and 20 bids so what do I know.
|
Its a misprint, should read £6500.
|
In yer dreams Dog. Dear but they are fetching really daft money. Viewing the video the washer bottle was a bit cruddy but would you believe that one of the side adds showed a refurbished one for only £200 :-O

That's a very nice clean example though. It looks new apart from the fit of door and boot panels.
As well as looking harmless and elderly, it would go like stuff off a shovel and be thoroughly practical, economical almost, as a daily driver. One might almost be tempted, had one Lud's money.
|
I had to do a double-take on the GBP65K example, at first glance it looks identical to my Dad's 1100 deluxe he had at the time.
Seeing the interior and rectangular headlamps / Mexico style front bumper implies it's not an 1100 deluxe and I detect that the 13" wheels are wider (but with normal hubcaps).
No picture of the engine though ? Otherwise - what a Q car, looking exactly like its pedestrian siblings but packing a Lotus engine. I do hope it didn't reply on drum brakes all round though.
|
