Luton has been the focus of a large Asian community since the 1960s having been attracted by jobs in manufacturing - Luton was once home to Vauxhall. I know having been brought up in St Albans about 12 miles away.

He may have felt marooned - but it is a bit like complaining about aircraft noise if you move close to an airport.

Many years ago I travelled freuently to India on business - so not the usual tourist trail. Two overriding memories of my first visit:

- passport control and customs in Delhi - a sea of people all pushing and shoving to get to the front. In the UK we politely queue! I decided that the only way I was going to get on my flight to Madras was to push as well

- in the departure lounge waiting for the Madras flight I was 1 of 2 white faces out of several hundred. I then properly understood how uncomfortable it felt like to be an ethnic minority - even without any sense of bigotry etc.

"If you have grown up in a 'densely white ethnic' community it must be unsettling to feel you are now living somewhere else."

The "mob" in Portsmouth weren't all there last Sunday to cause trouble, but just needed to vent their frustration at where they see their city and the wider country going. If you were born and bred in Pompey and lived there for 40, 50, 60+ years you'll have seen massive changes in the make up of the population. It's the UK's most densely populated city with many social issues. A football team which, despite it's sometimes lacklustre performance, still draws capacity crowds. And a naval city with many residents connected to (and very proud of) the Navy and dockyard. I may not share their passion, but I can see why they feel the need to protest.

Mapping of ethnic concentrations based on the census coutesy of ONS. It demonstrates how regional and even local the ethnic mix is.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/census/maps/choropleth/identity/ethnic-group/ethnic-group-tb-6a/white

Unsurprising as newly arrived groups will tend to feel more comfortable and settle where there is an existing like minded community sharing the same religion, culture, language etc. Helps with initial integration - finding jobs, getting healthcare, education etc etc.

Probably takes 3 generations+ (60-80 yrears+) before populations start to disperse influenced (probably) by UK education, changing family relationships, first generation immigrants dying, familiarity with UK cultures and behaviours, engaging in a diversity of careers, changing diets etc etc etc.

I believe there are districts in Yorkshire and the Midlands which are still densely ethnic and where English is still a second language for many. The assimilation you describe does not always happen.
I remember briefly visiting Blackburn about 20 years ago and being struck by the high proportion of Asians, and also by the contrast between those who remained ethnic and the others who had more clearly integrated.

The suggestion that UK will cease to be a majority white country, implicitly in short order, seems pretty alarmist to me.

Exactly the narrative of those organisations organising last week's 'events'.

For the UK as a whole 75% identify as white British. A further ~5% are European.

London white British are 37% - compared to rural Devon at 90-95%. I live ~10 miles from both Bristol and Bath, both sizeable cities. Bristol has 72%, Bath 86%.

Falling birth rates are skewed - some ethnicities will grow faster than others. Assuming nothing changes (a dangerous assumption) it will still be 100+ years before white British are outnumbered nationally.

Educationally many ethnic groups outperform white British, encouraged by a greater cultural work ethic. They increasingly populate the professional classes in medicine, law, finance etc etc. Simple resentment of their achievements by some is unjustified - the solution is to try harder.

I can understand why there are tensions as personal experience varies greatly depending on where one lives. This is not justification for the behaviour of the balacave clad!

Personally I welcome increased diversity. The concept of nationhood is slowiy being displaced by a global community characterised by the relatively unimpeded flow (Trump permitting!!) of goods, food, services, cultures etc etc.

Presumably none of these malevolent fascist thugs in balaclavas were complaining about wearing "face nappies" six years ago, or ever complain about people wearing the burqa, enthusiastic face covering wearers that they are.

Fat coked up cowards is what they are, wound up and set upon the law abiding public by the likes of Nigel Farage, Elon Musk and the owners of disgraceful fascist rags like the Daily Telegraph, Mail and Express, to further their project to install an anti-democratic, nativist, fascist government in the UK, along the lines of the Trump administration. Well I say nativist, but of course in America those pursuing this project are far from native themselves, as they don't live on Reservations.

I would say it is inevitable if the species survives long enough, but so what? It is what it is, or rather will be.

Around 15% of the world is "white", 85% not. It's rather an odd distinction to worry about when you think about it.

You are sort of right. The life expectancy assumption is constant whether alive today or born in the future. The phrasing is intended to reinforce the point that natural population reduction is not a swift solution.

The population will only change when reproduction rates fall. Thus in the first year 100m will die (8000m/80), and 60m born (8000m/2x1.5).

Over the coming 80 years if the crude assumptions are broadly correct 1.6 bn less will be born that die (40m x 80 years) - 20% of current population.

Assuming the scientists are right humanity needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions close to zero by ~2050 (25 years) to avoid potentially unmanageable climate change consequences.

There is uncertainty - sea level rise, ice cap and glacier melt, regional differences, thawing permafrost etc - but overall timescales and magnitude may be broadly correct.

Very simple maths. Assuming a global population currently 8bn and an average life of 80 years, it will take 80 years for those currently alive to die off.

Assuming reproduction rate falls from ~2 (replacement) to say 1.5 immediately there will be 6bn births in the next 80 years.

The simple maths could be refined with current demographics, average age of reproduction, year by year analysis etc, but it will not change the overall message - reducing populations is not the answer to climate change.

The benefit will come to future generations not alive today in 100-200 years time.

“Until we control population “

Interesting phrase. Who is the “we” and how do how do you propose they control it?

As per my post above. The U.K. population is now in decline as are actually those of most industrialised nations. World population is expected to decline from the 2080s.

The only effective way to reduce populations is to increase per capita wealth and standards of living.

The boat then arrived later, was refused landing by Southhampton and Portsmouth (the latter I believe because it's a naval dockyard). The mob was probably aware of the earlier demo and possibly alerted to the boat arriving, giving them time to get there.

By that I mean we (humankind) have constructively abandoned trying to limit it to +1.5C and now we are trying to prepare for just living with 2.5C; and the world's 'leading' country has in effect cancelled official work on climate change - withdrawing from the Paris agreement, and revoking the EPA’s 2009 “endangerment finding,” which had concluded that greenhouse-gas pollution threatens public health and welfare. That finding had served as the legal foundation for federal regulation of emissions from vehicles, power plants, and other sources.

Trump has publicly called climate change a hoax or con job, and his administration has attempted to dismantle much of the federal climate-regulatory framework.

On behalf of my grandchildren I am extremely sad about it.

I don't think we have cocked up (how quaint!) climate change.

It is a completely natural consequence of population growth.

When I was born, the world's population was 2 billion, now it is 8 billion. That is unsustainable. The UK population has increased by some 68%.

Until we control population we will continue trying to push water uphill with a broom (other phrases or cliches are available).

Many regard the current population as far too high. Climate change, other ennvironmental degradation and consumption of limited resources is broadly proportional to the total population.

Low birth rates create a demographic problem - not enough of working age to do that which the community, including an increasingly number of elderly, need. Until now the shortage has been met by immigration - the social, moral etc implications are another discussion.

There may be a very happy coincidence making the reduced birth rate a non-issue, and even desirable. Concerns over AI replacing jobs and employment opportunities may turn out to be the solution to the demographic challenge.

Fair comment.

I do like this forum. Nobody has actually said "they have a point".

I don't know what the answer is to migration problems, which clearly do exist. The world isn't going to go into reverse so it isn't going the be a return to the 1950's.

I wish people could get as exercised about climate change. How did we cock that up so badly? The imminent destruction of the ozone layer was warded off, can't that be an inspiration?

Racist, not right of centre but yes I have a bias. I accept that they are mostly ignorant pawns more to be pitied than scorned, with an admixture of badhats in my (objective of course) opinion but they should be treated equally as protesters. Large numbers of masked men in black is suggestive of something very bad and is premeditated intimidation by the instigators IMO.

I note that they have been directed by somebody with a brain to avoid an organised "march" as that would have to be notified to the police 6 days in advance, but large numbers moving through the streets together really amounts to the same thing.

"Disruption can become unlawful where protesters, for example:

-wilfully obstruct a highway;
-deliberately or recklessly cause a public nuisance;
-prevent people from carrying out ordinary day-to-day activities or journeys;
-obstruct major transport works or interfere with key national infrastructure;
-use “locking-on” or similar tactics intending or risking serious disruption;
-threaten, assault, harass, intimidate, or damage property."

The definition of public nuisance in particular is fairly wide, arguably too wide.

If the police wanted, or had been directed as I think they have been in the case of pro-Gaza and anti-oil protests, to take a firm line they have enough to latch on to there. Obstruction, public nuisance, getting in the way of everyday life, threatening and intimidating at the very least. But they did not. So we will have more of these "protests".

There is also this -

"Concealing identity at a protest Under sections 157 to 159 of the Crime and Policing Act 2026, someone commits an offence if they are “wearing or otherwise using an item that conceals their identity or another person’s identity” in a “designated place”.

A place could be designated by a police officer of rank of inspector or above if the officer reasonably believes that a protest will take place, and offences are likely to be committed. The offence carries a maximum penalty of one month imprisonment and a £1,000 fine.

The act provides for defences for a person charged with an offence of wearing a face covering to prove that they “wore or otherwise used the item” for a purpose relating to their health, religion or work.54 This new offence is in addition to existing police powers to force people to remove face coverings in places where a designation is made under section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, or if a section 60 order is in place. Under these powers, a police officer can request that an individual removes a face covering if they reasonably believe that offences may be committed in that locality, and the face covering is being used to conceal their identity."

I don't ask that they are treated like striking miners but this is the not-very-thin end of a nasty wedge and they need to know that decent people see it for what it is.

Locked up and the key thrown away? No. It wouldn't do to make martyrs of them. A bit of community service maybe, gardening outside migrant hotels perhaps.

"It may have been possible given time to get support from other parts of the Kent area or even draft in officers from other forces. This would take hours. Possibly provoking a violent reaction from protesters by making arrests could lead to the police being humiliated in a street fight."

Mutual Aid is the co-ordinated movement of Police between forces. This does rely on forward planning and intelligence. Responding to spontaneous incidents in numbers is much more difficult and takes hours and depletes routine response. Alternatively 'off duty' PCs are mobilised which takes much longer. Resourses are always stretched on a normal day.

If you go back to the Miners Strike large columns of Police were formed and deployed as necessary. These were all on overtime and overtime paid to cover back in force. All co-ordinated locally and via a centre in London. The length of time allowed logistics to develop but think in terms of transport, accommodation, feeding etc.

If widespread disorder in several locations erupted then control would be lost. If its defined as a Riot the Police pick up the tab.

Report is that up to 500 protesters wearing balaclavas and appearing intent on causing trouble turned up with no notice. I suspect they vastly outnumbered frontline police that would normally be on duty. Normal demo planning processes simply did not happen.

It may have been possible given time to get support from other parts of the Kent area or even draft in officers from other forces. This would take hours. Possibly provoking a violent reaction from protesters by making arrests could lead to the police being humiliated in a street fight.

Understandably no one was arrested despite justifiable grounds for so doing. More importantly a failure to arrrest wrongdoers risks making protesters contemptuous of the law and police encouraging further such incidents.

Extremely worrying - societies only work where there is an acceptance of societal norms, and fall apart if violent disorder is left unchallenged.

>How this disorder is driven is of course subject to debate.

Locals are saying that the protest was hijacked. It started in the afternoon with locals who are P'd off after an Iraqi was arrested a few days ago for raping a 14yo boy*. The balaclavas arrived hours later so it sounds like they were tipped off.

* Portsmouth has the largest concentration of illegal immigrant accomodation in Hampshire and has seen quite a few sexual and violent assaults perpetrated.

How this disorder is driven is of course subject to debate. Some would suggest that it is driven by long term Russian interference in the background to destabilise law and order. There was a suggestion in 2024 that there were 'Fixers' in the background of outbreaks of public disorder initially focused on temporary immigrant accommodation.
