>> Going via Runcorn is a long way round. After crossing the Mersey the road then goes through Speke and South Liverpool. Better to take the M57 on that road, and then the M62. >>

If you use the Runcorn bridge (either new or old one) the toll is £2.40 per crossing, which you have to pay (online) before midnight the next day, on pain of a fine. If you haven't used the new bridge before, you might find it interesting.

But the choice depends whether time or simplicity is of the essence. I don't think the M6 Toll is worth it unless congestion is significant at the time. If you have plenty of time and like a journey on fairly quiet A-roads needing some thought, you could do what I do when going south - A51 Nantwich to Lichfield then A5 as far as you want. Much more interesting.

That's a longish journey!

I've wasted too many hours of my life that I can't get back trying to avoid the M6 Toll. I'm still a fan of avoiding motorways at times but for a 4hr + journey I'd rather get a move on. For me M6 (inc Toll) and turn left M62! - simples.

I'd certainly avoid Derby, it always seems to take ages and there are numerous cameras of various sorts trying to catch you out in unfamiliar areas!

I spent a few years at the University of Liverpool, and later got my Master's there. However, the road system in the City centre has changed enormously since then.

>> The best and direct route to Liverpool city centre is via M6 and then the
>> M62 which will take you to the city centre. James Street station is not far
>> from the Pier Head.

That tallies with my experience meeting our son though we often leave the car with him near West Derby and use Ubers to get into town.

When he was at Uni near St Michaels and later living near Lark Lane we used the M56 and Runcorn/new bridge. As mentioned above these are tolled via Merseyflow. The Lad wasn't very good at remembering to pay for his crossings and kept getting Penalty Charges which landed on my doormat as during a peripatetic period between graduating and securing a proper job his car remained registered at my address.

I’m currently in Anglesey after departing south Essex . M11 to A14 then pick up M6 /M6 toll ( £12 ) . Up past stoke on Trent and swing a left just below Chester to pick up the A55 along the north Wales coast.

I think I'll see what the traffic is like as I go. If it's the M6 toll, I'll obey SWMBO...

Do what I do and leave it to Google Maps - the only decision is whether or not to allow tolls in settings for the M6 Toll.
If it’s the lowest fuss solution you’re looking for, up the M6 to the M62 and turn left.
If I’m on my running costs, I don’t use the M6 Toll, if I can expense it then I use it at peak times.
Always fun when I’ve a LHD car…

Son in Liverpool so I know that area well. Stayed at the Atlantic Tower several times.

M6 or M1/A50 would be driven by traffic/time considerations. Would need a large time saving to justify using the M6 toll. I actually quite like the A50, off motorway keeps the senses going.

I'd use the M62 to access the and follow signs/satnav for whichever hotel you're using.

The M56 route via Runcorn and the Speke Expressway involves Merseyflow and tolls.

Going to Liverpool shortly to meet some family, who will travel from just over the border in N Wales. (they will come by train)

Undecided about route after reaching the M6 where the A14 ends.
M6 and Toll and M6 and M56 or M62 or up to Derby and A50 across to Stoke on Trent and meander a bit via Northwich etc.
Travellin weekday leaving very early..
Suggestions
