I'm pretty sure that gethostbyname() doesn't even check the DNS cache until it's got to the end of the hosts file, failed to find a match and checked that DNS is alive. The file is searched sequentially so unless the IP address is already in the DNS cache the resolving routines have to trawl through the file line by line until it finds the correct entry. If the entry does not exist it will have searched every single line before resorting to DNS. Its incredibly slow, causes the screen to ’white out’, and throws up a message on another open tab that the site is slow, and do I want to wait or dismiss. If I’m watching YouTube on another tab, that also slows or stops. Also, if I read an article, and then hit the back arrow, it takes me back to an older version of their main page.
