It asked something along the lines of having had eye surgery to which I responded that I had. I'd had a cataract done several years before thereby actually improving my eyesight so I responded with a 'Yes'. It didn't ask what the procedure was. Because of that the application was not renewed automatically and I waited several months for the Medical Unit to process. They ultimately asked my to sign a declaration stating my eyesight was up to the legal requirement and that was it. I'd also had a HGV licence which stipulated that I wore eye correction for driving that class of vehicle. I had let that slide previouslly as I'd for some time driven in excess of 7.5 ton (C) nor was I liable to and paying the medical fee was therefore pointless. This year my 70th renewal came up and I wanted to retain up to 16 seat minibuses (C1) and up to 7.5 ton (D1) as they automatically fall off your licence. In order to do that I had to have a medical which last for 3 years. These can now be done by independent companies using young in service Drs for £50. The eyesight test was not particularly taxing. The ironic thing is they automatically renewed my HGV entitlement again (C) which is any HGV thats not articulated with no stipulation re eyesight. The code on your licence (like mine) was valid when that licence was issued. I still have the code but can read the number plate test at a much greater distance. I was once asked if i wore glasses for driving on a stop here in colchester. Pointed out that they were varifocals and worn all the time. Other than for watching TV I never wear glasses in the house. Varifocals/multifocal daily disposable contacts are more hindrance then help for reading and using PC screen. I habitually wear specs for driving cycling with contacts a day or two a week if doing outdoor stuff. Today after a few days away in the 'van at CAMC Wyatt's Covert I drove off with specs still inside the caravan. Didn't realise until I was on the North Orbital Road with no opportunity to stop and retrieve before the M25. Got all the way home without. No trouble with signs including usual Smart M/way stuff about lanes closed and reports of debris. Just twigged this minute that there was a spare pair in the car!! My licence has a code to show I require vision correction which no doubt would have lead to questions if I'd been stopped.
