They use battery powered angle grinders (that they nicked from some builders van)
or long handled bolt croppers, the ones favoured by railway cable tealeaves.

Have you ever used a commercial fast charger? The cable can be around an inch thick or more an definitely not capable of being cut with household pliers.

Do you? The measures have already led to a number of arrests.

>> Leave a residual charge in the cable - not enough to kill but give anyone with a pair of pliers a decent jolt as the try to cut the cable.>>

Common or garden insulated pliers protect up to 1000V, more than sufficient for cutting a car cable, especially if wearing rubber boots! A far greater problem is the twice weekly cable theft from railways, a frustrating Europe-wide experience for hundreds of thousands of law abiding (as opposed to the other sort) travellers - and a shining example of broken 'law and order' which governments are supposed to provide.

>>Three thoughts,

Leave a residual charge in the cable - not enough to kill but give anyone with a pair of pliers a decent jolt as the try to cut the cable.

Fit sensors so that as the cable is cut it activates loud siren, and high intensity light

Use CCTV to identify offenders

Sadly in this day and age none of that is a deterrent anymore - plenty of cars and motorbikes being stolen by folk driving stolen vehicles / cloned plates, masked up and all the alarms and cctv aint gonna make a difference

What surprises me is cable theft from 24 hour petrol stations. A deserted retail park I get - I pulled into Decathlon car park in Walsall at 8pm on a Sunday to find 12 out of 14 cables cut off - but an illuminated, staffed forecourt?
As above, some now have a thick fabric sheathing over the cable that sprays the thief with Smart Water if someone tries to cut them.

The cables at a public station will have thick copper if they are to charge at the rate people expect. Probably a bit easier to nick than the traditional stuff alongside railway lines. All pretty predictable really.

Starting to see news and social media reports that the scallies are cutting off and having away the cables at EV charging points.

Problem is they target an area overnight, leaving it bereft of charging facilites the next morning.
Lyme Regis was an example, leaving only Tesco with any working.
