Yes, on reflection, after the initial surprise, I got a fair result.

I’m afraid you did make “a claim” . The claim was investigated and declined but you still did make “a claim”. A claim does not have to be successful.

I received my home insurance renewal today. It had risen from £164 last year to £231. The cause of increase was a claim I instigated earlier in the year for escape of water. However at the time their contractor attended and decided it was historic and there was no recent escape.

There was therefore no claim. I was told this at the time by the insurer by phone. Now at renewal they have recorded it as a claim for £351. They say that’s what they paid the contractor. Hence the increase. I queried this as, if it was a claim I would surely have been due to pay for it under my £450 excess. The call handler took it to the back office and rang me back.

The upshot is that they are reinstating my full no claims bonus but the new quote is still high at £223. They also say I still have to declare it as a “claim” if I seek a quote elsewhere.

Checking on comparison sites, including the “claim” there are a couple thirty quid or so less than this but generally they are in the same ballpark as my existing insurer.

I am inclined to stay where I am as they were very responsive when the “claim” arose and they did fork out for the investigation at their cost rather than ask me to pay. Also today the call handling was excellent, albeit not with the result I wanted.

I won’t name the insurer as I am not out of pocket overall and I assume they all work in the same way.

I guess the lesson is that even if you don’t claim your policy can be increased and you need to include the non claim in requests for quotes.
