You're right about the random brake lights - yes I'm pretty sure adaptive cruise does it and we had a terrible journey on the southbound M1 in congestion this week with no obvious cause. This has always happened of course but I did think at the time that more brake light flashing probably means more bunching. A straw poll suggests a small minority actually use cruise but that might grow with the adaptive variety.
As a (now) irregular motorway user I thought I might see some evidence of people actually driving on the left, but if anything the middle lane mimsers have become more numerous and they now seem to be claiming lane 3 on the 4 lane sections. It was very hard to maintain progress and I blame these idiots 100%.
We went up to SW Cumbria via the M1, M6 earlier on the week and had a very tedious journey so I came back via the A65 which I haven't used for years and really enjoyed it. My mistake then was to end up on the M1 again.
Incidentally, the Lakes has always been busy in school holidays but the hotspots are now overrun. We had a relatively peaceful time in the south west - even Ravenglass, one of my old favourite places, was fairly quiet. We went to the Lakeland Motor Museum at Newby Bridge - worth the visit.
