A round up of the good, the bad and the ugly on ebay

I'm not familiar with buying on ebay, so this may be a naïve question. Will the final bidder seriously be expected to pay the amount they've bid?

To be quite honest Alanović it's a bit flash for me (I'd much prefer grey primer all over including the wheels), and I don't think alloy wheels are suitable for a vehicle like that. No doubt it has a V8 and goes well, but it isn't really designed to go fast and would be a bit hairy at any real speed.
I'd have loved it thirty years ago or more. But it's too macho for me now. I like efficient cars you know, even snorting monsters can have an efficient side.

This is the same as mine but different colour, if anyone wants a good MB coupe this is well worth a look, if the history checks out its a future classic
|
That looks great GB. If, like you say, the history checks out, it could be a fantastic buy
|
>> That looks great
I think its the genuine article, not flattering pictures by any means quite how he managed to make it look so drab especially that lovely leather is anyones guess, its well priced though for such a low mileage low ownership and well maintained example.
Be a tragedy if it ended up being chavved as so many of them have.

I see his farther(sic) had them fitted in 2009! It also claims to have a particulate filter - that'd be clever. Note the air-con's not working because of no belt.
Perhaps there's more hidden?
|
>> It also claims to have a particulate filter
I clocked that one 'n all, but then all filters filter particulates innit, so it's not in-correct, and that, like.

One of my fellow minicabbers in Clapham had one of those in RAF blue, Ted. He was an ex-Rhodesian policeman known to colleagues as 'Dirty Jim' (he was a bit like you in a way Edouardo... no offence).
Nasty little motor I thought.

That's one of the last Portuguese built ones - they rust even more than the French ones when not looked after.

I just sold him a "how to use the camera on your smartphone" book.

That's a seriously large tin by the side of the car door in the second picture - I can't tell if its lager or red bull, but it may be why he didn't finish the restoration....
|
I can't remember the last time I saw a car I wanted so much, and it's easily affordable. Trouble is my car is used mainly for work and this would be both impractical to use and a bit heavy on running costs.
Somebody buy it for God's sake, before I twitch on the button in a moment of madness -

It does look nice but if you want some mental images to help you walk away, then consider that William Hague had one for a start.
I can't talk though, I very nearly bought a then only mildly second hand Ford Probe for my wife. Test drove it and everything. Want to think that was a 2.5 V6.
Only thing which saved me was Steve Coogan using one as his character Gareth Cheeseman's wheels.
Nice though RR, very nice, probably be cheap enough and being a 2.0 won't really be too steamy on running costs...
|
Even if it broke I could just sit in it on the drive and pretend.
William Hague? I could live with that, long as Neil Kinnock or Bruce Forsyth never had one.

Probably wouldn't break though. Do you have some string back gloves, some slip on shoes and a Pringle sweater just in case you do buy it?
|
I was thinking more Raybans and a packet of Gauloises.
|
Foster Grants and B&H more like ! Grey shoes. Medallion, sovereign ring, identity bracelet.

You wouldn't be the first to splash out a lot of good money on an old Cougar.... ;-)
|
Aye true, but you'd hope at least with car he'd get more use of it than just ten minutes round the back of Asda.
|
Just read the listing again. 10 previous owners. Old cougar indeed...
|
A bloke I worked with had one. Very unusual situation - I'm sure he was in his late twenties when he passed his test and not a natural driver, he was a family man when he bought it. I was surprised as he liked to keep a low professional profile. He had a drink problem and was fond of "skirt" not that that had a bearing on his choice of car.

Sorry I have to be brutally honest. Totally devoid of any style or class. Same length as a Mondeo but few of the practical benefits.
|
And apart from that, if they rust as badly as the smaller Puma they'll be very rare indeed!
|
Weren't they just a Mondeo coupé?
|
>> Weren't they just a Mondeo coupé?
>>
Yup
|
No one bid on that Cougar RR. Guess you must have resisted?
|
>> No one bid on that Cougar RR. Guess you must have resisted?
>>
Just.
I hadn't originally noticed the high number of previous owners which to me points to all not being well. However, there do seem to be a decent number of Cougars for sale on ebay and they don't command high prices. They've probably reached the point where values have bottomed out before possibly climbing as the numbers dwindle and I do fancy one. Higher running costs than the budget stuff I tend to favour now, but with a substantial saving on buying price I'd most likely still be quids in over the cars lifetime.
I know it's only a Mondeo with a sock down it's pants, but you get a lot of car for not much money and I love the sleek looks compared to the modern tanks of today.
Hmmm, now relisted at £450.

Yes - it seems from the windscreen damage and deflection of the screen that the A post is damage on the driver's side.
But is the car worth it for spares to someone? No idea myself. Break it down for spares and it might be worth the asking price - well who knows what that is because the bids are not over.

I didn't read the text posted with the add. I love: "the near side is immaculate as is the boot and 95% of the bonnet" so the bonnet needs fixing as does a lot else.
I got rear-ended by an HGV in a hire Fiesta. The front half of the car was probably immaculate too. The car was written off for obvious reasons :-)

I didn't think they rallied Marinas - Landcrabs, yes, Marinas no.
|
"HAS SIDEWINDER EXHAUST."
You can see it on the nearside, looks low to me. Don't think it would last long on a stage.
|
They did indeed rally the Marina. In the 70s I had tyres fitted to my Herald that were destined for a rally Marina but never used. Unusual size... 180 x something Goodyear mud and snow tyres.
These tyres... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Goodyear-G800-Ultragrip-Rally-Special-Tyres-6-off-/290911511973

An (well natured) argument has ensued on a FB page that I subscribe to. Was there ever a genuine van version ? AROnline is vague - Wiki gives it a mention, and the A40 forum is a big bad zero...
Anyone any evidence.
|
>> Was there ever a genuine van version ?
Not that I can remember. But there were a few others with the rear window blanked off as a van modification.
My father had one. Can't remember if I ever drove it but I didn't like it much. I wanted him to get a Citroen or something else interesting and foreign... but he had special CSMA deals on BL or whatever cars. He replaced it with a Marina 1300 coupé to my mounting scorn...
Actually neither car was all bad. The A series engine common to both was eminently tweakable and a lot of owners fettled their examples mildly. Can't remember Marinas doing much other than rallying but A40s were numerous in saloon car racing for a year or two. Both were variants of the Morris Minor 1000 under the skin.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the venerable old A Series engine. Always punched way above its weight IMHO, I have had cars with it in 848, 998, 1098, and 1275cc forms and they all reached decent mileages without any problems.

According to this:
A van version was also produced in MKI and MKII version, these were based on the Countryman. They were fully trimmed but having a steel panel instead of the rear quarter light. It was a export only model, with most of them going to Finland or Portugal about 600 in total.

Yes.
I am sure there's an echo in here?

The Mk 1s had a lifting glass ' hatch ' and a drop down lower panel. They wouldn't have made very good vans with a fixed centre rail for the locks.. The Mk 2 had a fully lifting tailgate as we know it now. Much better for large loads.
I think this suspect is a conversion. For one thing it's right hand drive and the side panel seems to be flush whereas on the true van the panel is inset like the original glass.
I did the same thing with a cheap, mot fail Mk1 Renault 5, taking out the rear glasses and bonding cut out steel plates in their place. I had it flashed over in white acrylic. It looked good. I used it for some years as a service van. It earned a lot of money and I got £50 back at auction when it needed more welding again. I've some pics somewhere.

The combined is usually between the urban & extra-urban, never seen it less than the urban. So I suspect it's not right, no.
|
Ahh, didn't spot that, so possibly mixed the urban and combined up. But still!

11 mpg is still more than 10mpg TMC... But it does seem a very thirsty Mercedes. Are they all like that?

Now that one's very tasty indeed... nice colour too. Fabulous car in its day, for the rich. I fancied one when I was abusing my cooking R Type... the wheel and facia make me a bit nostalgic. Please note (those interested) the vast great air cleaner filled if I remember correctly with oily crumpled-up chicken wire or something similar.
I suppose the carburettors are standard RR SUs but they can't be seen.
Nearly half a million quid though for a 60-year-old Rolls-Royce... rebuilt or not, it won't react well to pedal-to-the-metal driving.
|

Bumpers and/or rear parking sensors
"Orders are now being accepted with production of 5 units per year."
So get in quick
|
I think it was available on late R types, and probably on the Silver Dawn RR model (auto only) sold in the US.
But you don't really need it in an R type. Once the car is rolling it steers quite easily. Not as soft as powered steering, but quite manageable.
Mind you I did get calluses on my palms when I had it, mainly driving about in London. I didn't mind of course, but a lady might. She would have to wear gloves.

Nonsense. I see ladies every day with their bare hands covered with earth or mud. And some of their gardening gloves are filthier inside than out. Tchah!
|
Proper gardeners don't wear gloves!
Pat
|
>> Proper gardeners don't wear gloves!
Just so Pat... but gloves can be useful when dealing with brambles, thistles, nettles etc.
|
>> I did get calluses on my palms when I had it, mainly driving about in London.
The calluses were caused I think by stopping the wheel from spinning too far or fast under castor return when accelerating out of corners. The wheel is big, to give plenty of leverage, and smooth and shiny... but that action oft repeated will give you calluses. With power steering, castor return seems much better controlled, more damped.
The Continental was a lot lighter than the saloon, with many aluminium panels, so the steering was probably lighter too.
